Trip to Bulgaria: Ruse, the Ivanovo Cave Churches, and Basarabov Monastery, departing from Bucharest
About This Tour
Enjoy a one-day getaway across the border and discover Bulgaria’s cultural and spiritual treasures on a memorable journey. Your first stop takes you to the Monastery of Saint Dimitrie Basarabov, an impressive place of worship and one of the hundreds of rock-hewn monasteries found in this region. Historically documented as far back as the 15th century, the monastery invites you to discover the tranquility of the place. Pilgrims can climb the 48 stone steps leading to a platform where the niche is located in which, according to tradition, the Venerable Dimitrie used to sleep.
The journey continues with an exploration of the Ivanovo Cave Churches, a unique monastic complex listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which will take your breath away with the ingenuity with which it has been integrated into the wild natural landscape. The day culminates in the vibrant city of Ruse, known as “Little Vienna” due to its elegant, Central European-inspired architecture. Here we’ll admire the beautiful Holy Trinity Cathedral, followed by some free time—the perfect opportunity to stroll through the picturesque historic center, enjoy a specialty coffee, or have a delicious lunch on the banks of the Danube.

Essential Information
Departure is at 7:00 a.m. from Bucharest (Victoriei Square, Main Parking Lot), with an estimated return time between 9:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. (depending on traffic, route, and wait times at the border). The estimated duration is 1 day. Participation requires a valid ID card or passport. Seats on the bus are assigned starting with the second row, strictly in the order in which the deposit was paid. During the warm season, we recommend wearing casual clothing suitable for high temperatures, and don’t forget to stay hydrated, which is essential for your well-being. Minors aged 0–18 must carry a valid form of identification to cross the border. Since the trip involves traveling to Bulgaria, for personal expenses we recommend having leva (the local currency) on hand or using a debit or credit card, although some locations also accept euros. The tour includes short walks and climbing steps on uneven terrain to reach the rock formations, so wearing comfortable shoes is mandatory. The schedule is flexible, and participants are asked to be punctual at the times communicated by the guide to ensure the smooth running of the activities.
